A Senator’s healthy investment

In matters of housing, 2005 was a great year for Senator Marco Rubio. At that time, and contrary to market trends, in the middle of the housing bubble, of the Real Estate explosion across the country, the Senator managed to buy a house previously sold for more than a million dollars for almost half that price. By year's end Rubio had three properties to his name.

Today he has only two: The house he bought around the corner from his old home – which he sold at a healthy profit of $209 thousand dollars, and one in Leon County, in Tallahassee, where he lived with his colleague Congressman David Rivera.

According to most conservative estimates there are, in the United States of America, about one million 500 thousand homeless people. According to other institutions dedicated to helping the homeless, these figures may go up to three million 500 thousand people without a place to call Home - 40% of them veterans of the United States Armed Forces.

One third of these people are children and that 30% of the total number are in Florida. These numbers translate as follows: There are in the State of Florida between 450,000 to 1,050.000 homeless, of which 135,000 to 315,000 are minors and have no health insurance. From these figures, two thirds live in the streets of Florida, not in shelters already overcrowded.

According to the Mortgage Bankers Association, every three months, 250,000 new families enter into foreclosure and one child in every classroom in America is at risk of losing his/her home because their parents are unable to pay their mortgage.

Similarly, a study conducted by the MetLife insurance company in 2003, found that 52% of the employees, live paycheck to paycheck and, no matter whether you're homeless or not, almost 50 million Americans have no health insurance.

A look at the money received by the political campaign of Senator Marco Rubio in recent years, one can see, besides the large number of lawyers and lobbyists, that the Health and Real Estate industries contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars. Hopefully these contributions have nothing to do with the healthy Senator’s real estate transactions.

Meanwhile, in Leon County, in Florida's capital, a house belonging to a Senator who has no military record, who earns $174,000 salary paid by the taxpayers, and includes an excellent health and benefits package for himself and his family, sits empty.

Members of his Republican Tea Party demand that the public sector cuts benefits, such as Unemployment, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid ... Where should we start ... What do you think?

El lado oscuro de un senador Rubio

En cuestiones de vivienda, el año 2005 fue un gran año para el senador Marco Rubio. Por ese entonces y contrario a las tendencias del mercado, en medio de la burbuja, de la explosión del mercado de bienes raíces en todo el país, el senador logró comprar una casa de un millón de dólares por casi la mitad del precio. Para final de año Rubio tenia tres propiedades a su nombre.

Hoy apenas tiene dos: la casa que compro a la vuelta de la que vendió y que le generara una ganancia de $209 mil dólares y una que tiene abandonada dese hace años en el condado de León en Tallahassee, adonde vivía con su colega David Rivera.

Según las cifras más conservadoras, hay en los Estados Unidos Un Millón 500 mil personas sin techo. Según otras instituciones dedicadas a ayudar a los desamparados, la cifras llegan a un tope de Tres Millones 500 mil personas que no tienen un lugar al que le puedan llamar Casa. Y un 40% de ellos ha prestado servicio militar en las fuerzas armadas de los Estados Unidos.

Las cifras concuerdan en que una tercera parte de estas personas son menores de edad y que un 30% de del total de ellas se encuentran en la Florida. Estos números se traducen así: hay en el Estado de la Florida entre 450 mil y Un Millón 50 mil personas sin vivienda, de los cuales de 135 a 315 mil son menores de edad y no cuentan con seguro de salud. De estas cifras, dos terceras partes viven en las calles de la Florida.

Según la Asociación de Banqueros Hipotecarios (Mortgage Bankers Association) cada tres meses las viviendas de 250.000 familias entran en proceso de reposeción (forelosure) y uno de cada cuatro menores en la aulas escolares del país corre un alto riego de perder su vivienda porque sus padres no pueden pagar la hipoteca,

Asimismo, un estudio conducido por la empresa de seguros MetLife en el año 2003, concluyó que el 52% de los empleados, la fuerza laboral del país, vive de cheque en cheque y sin importar si se es desamparado o no, casi 50 millones de estadounidenses no tienen seguro de salud.

Revisando las cantidades de dinero recibidas por la campana política del senador Marco Rubio durante los últimos años, se puede ver que, además de un número importante de abogados cabilderos, la industria de la Salud y de Bienes Raíces han aportado cientos de miles dólares a sus campañas. Esperemos que nada tengan que ver esto con sus transacciones de propiedades horizontales y que todas hayan sido concebidas de una forma vertical, transparente y bien asegurado.

Mientras tanto, en el Condado de León, en la capital de la Florida, se encuentra vacía una casa que está a nombre de un senador que tiene dos, que no prestó servicio militar y que devenga un salario de $174.000 que pagamos los contribuyentes y, además, su curul viene con un excelente paquete de beneficios y seguro de salud para él y su familia. Dicen los miembros de su Partido Republicano del Té que el sector público debe recortar gastos y beneficios a los ciudadanos de este país… ¿Por donde empezar…Usted que opina?

"Democracy is the path to Socialism"- so said Karl Marx
Whatever "Ism" you pick, I rather be on the side of the sociopolitical movement that aims for a classless and stateless society structured upon common ownership and responsibility of the means of production and the end of the subsistence existence wage labor that chains people and keeps them in a state of perpetual debt...One that- to paraphrase Marx, expect to get 'from each according to his abilities, and to give to each according to his needs.'
The Republican Tea Party on the other hand, is a savage sociopolitical movement that also aims for the reduction of Government and an eventual stateless society. However, this movement bases its goals upon the permanence of a class difference structured society, one that reveres and bows to the private ownership God of the means of production and the perpetuation subsistence existence low wage labor.
Therefore, both movements aim for reduction and eventual fading away of the Government. However, the path embraced by Marx is through the education, enhancement and bettermen of human kind, while the Republican Tea Party's path to a stateless society is through the perpetuation of class differences, the accumulation of wealth by a few and the deliberate dumbing down of the masses...
Our current system seems to be imploding at seams, much like the old Soviet Union did 20 or so years ago. We've just finished bailing out Wall Street and the nation's banking system; in fact we've been bailing out the Savings and Loans and the private industry for years (the Big Three and the Airlines come to mind) but when we "the people" need a helping hand to recover from Irene or any other Natural Disaster, the Republican Tea Party naturally conditions FEMA's help to yet more cuts in our Social Security Net while cutting taxes for the rich.
So there you have it. You pick: The aberration of CEOs and Executive's million dollar salaries and Wall Street and Bankers bonuses, American Idol, FOX News and the open declaration of 'preemptive' wars, illegal country invasions, wars on Unions and the Middle Class or an open declaration of a Second War on Poverty, a stand for Human and Civil Rights, an Open Immigration, an end to the Bush/Cheney wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the reparation of America's Good Will through the World... call it what you will, the current state of affairs can not stand too much longer.

We are all displaced workers not undocumented immigrants.
Back in the 60s I was a kid growing up and living in a middle class neighborhood in Medellin, Colombia. Every day, religiously, after our meal’s time, there were people knocking at the door asking for the scraps and leftovers of our table. The faces at the door were mostly kids; in fact children- humble people. These, I suspect, are now well-seasoned members of the armed guerrilla groups that have, for decades, kept the Colombian government in check and are at the root and reflection of a social tension problem common to most of our countries.
I confess, I am not an expert on the subject but I suspect that hunger and social tensions are one of the major causes people move in search of social and economic security and stability, leaving behind their beloved hometowns and their countries.

People do not leave the place where they were born, where they grew up, where the roots, the flavor of their food, the familiar smells, their lives, their ancestors and their history are for vain reasons. No, people migrate because the risk of not doing it outweighs the price they have to pay if they were to stay put. Staying behind would mean a human toll impossible to bear with any dignity.

For the displaced there are no physical country borders, those are but imaginary lines they must cross on their way to a promised place of prosperity and security.
Today, my adopted country turns against this promise of prosperity and security. Today, my adopted country turns its back on the displaced of the world not knowing that they – the displaced, are a direct product of a combination of arbitrary economic and war policies that our own country fosters and imposes upon other more vulnerable countries.

Today, instead of an unconditional open door in Ellis Island - that not so long ago received and embraced millions of displaced Europeans, we are building walls, implementing discriminatory laws and are unloading our frustrations caused by our own socio-political tensions, compounded by a stubborn recession, on the most vulnerable members of our society: Immigrants in general, the Latino Immigrant in particular.
Whether documented or undocumented, today’s displaced worker is an immigrant facing discrimination, racial hateful attacks and social rejection.

Today, Lady Liberty, beacon of hope and democracy, instead of the poem to welcome the dispossessed of the world, written by Emma Lazarus, and placed at the feet of such sovereign foreign immigrant, intolerant voices have posted a "No Trespassing" sign that deems its light and fills her with pain.
The tension, between the displaced and the locals, breaks up families leaving behind a trail of tears and suffering.
With each deportation, with each abuse of authority, with each racial attack we are planting the seeds of resentment that will comeback to hunt us years later.
Today, humble people are knocking at the door of our adopted country. People thirsty and hungry for prosperity and security; we are slamming our door in their faces not knowing that we may well be the cause of their displacement that we so quickly and harshly judge.

Por allá en los años 60s yo vivía en Medellín, Colombia, en un vecindario de clase media. Todos los días, religiosamente, después de la hora de comer tocaban a la puerta para pedir los sobrados. Quienes llamaban a la puerta eran siempre menores, en realidad niños, gente humilde. Estos, sospecho, hoy son aguerridos miembros de los grupos alzados en armas que han mantenido en jaque al gobierno Colombiano durante décadas y la raíz y reflejo del problema de una tensión social común en todos nuestros países.

Confieso, no soy un experto en la materia pero sospecho que el hambre y las tensiones sociales son una de las causas principales por las que la gente abandona poblaciones y busca seguridad social y económica fuera de su pueblo o de su país.

La gente no abandona el lugar donde nació, donde creció, donde están sus raíces, el sabor de su comida, el aroma de su vida: su historia, por razones vanas. No, la gente emigra porque de no hacerlo el precio, el costo, el peso, el riesgo sería imposible de sobrellevar sana y holgadamente.

Para la gente desplazada no existen fronteras físicas, éstas son apenas líneas imaginarias que encuentra en su camino a una promesa de prosperidad y seguridad.

Hoy, mi país adoptivo, se vuelve contra esta promesa de prosperidad y seguridad. Hoy mi país adoptivo se vuelve en contra de los desplazados del mundo sin saber que éstos son producto directo de una combinación de arbitrarias políticas económicas y de guerra que nuestro propio país adoptivo implanta sobre otros más vulnerables e inestables.

Hoy, en lugar de una incondicional Ellis Island de puertas abiertas a millones de desplazados europeos, levantamos muros, imponemos leyes discriminantes y desahogamos nuestra propia tensión sociopolítica, agravada por una terca recesión económica, sobre los miembros más vulnerables de nuestra sociedad: el inmigrante en general, el latino en particular. Sin importar si es documentado o indocumentado el desplazado de hoy, es un inmigrante discriminado, agredido y desechado.

Hoy a la Dama de la Libertad, luz de esperanza y democracia, en lugar del poema de bienvenida a los despojados del mundo escrito por Emma Lazarus y puesto a los pies de tan soberano regalo extranjero, le han colgado un letrero de prohibido pasar que opaca esa luz.

Esta tensión entre desplazados y locales desune familias y a su paso deja una estela de dolor. Con cada deportación, con cada abuso de autoridad, con cada ataque de intolerancia racial se siembra la semilla que años más tarde volverá a espantarnos de una forma aterradora.

Hoy tocan a la puerta de nuestro país adoptivo gente humilde, con sed y hambre de prosperidad y seguridad y se la estamos cerrando en la cara sin saber que somos la causa de ese desplazo que tan duramente juzgamos.

A family must have a job to have an income and based on that income lies the family's ability to meet its expenses and pay its debts. If the family manages to regularly make payments on its debts the family's credit score goes up and it is easier for companies to extend more credit for the family that has proved to be creditworthy.
Although over the last four decades in general, the Bush years in particular, the Government has seen its income reduced and, spite of this, it has always met its debt responsibilities: Thus its high rating credit.
Now, the family as well as the government Must have a job to have an income so the ability to meet and pay for expenses and debts can be met. However, if the head of the family is unemployed and with whatever money he or she has saved up likes to go out, get drunk, and spent all of his father's or previous Administration's success and savings, picks fights for which someone else has to pick up the tab for the damages... Then the family's budget goes up in smoke.

Rigoberto Uran: Orgullo Nacional

La historia de Rigoberto Uran mas que un motivo de orgullo, no solamente Paisa, es uno de una muestra clara del poder de superacion del ser humano. Urán nació en el pueblo de Urrao, en el Departamento de Antioquia, en Colombia, a unos 140 km al oeste de Medellín.
Su padre fue asesinado por un presunto grupo de paramilitares cuando él tenía 14 años, pocos meses después de haberlo introducido en el mundo de la bicicleta. Desde entonces Rigoberto asumio la posicion de su padre como vendedor de loteria y cabeza de familia.
A los 16 el equipo Orgullo Paisa lo adjunto a sus filas y se lo llevo a Medellin. Tras tres gloriosas temporadas en el ciclismo colombiano fue contratado por el equipo profesional italiano 'Team Tenax'. De alli ha pasado por el Unibet.com, el Caisse d'Espargne para finalmente pasar al Team Sky. Uran ha corrido la Vuelta a Espania, La Vuelta a Francia, el Giro de Italia, el Tour de Suisse, entre otras. En la Vuelta a Espania del 2010 se encontraba en la octava posicion en la general, con grandes posibilidades de subir al podium, cuando sufrio un accidente que lo obligo a retirarse.

Hoy, en la Vuelta a Francia, Uran se encuentra de primero en la tabla general de la categoria Juvenil, cuarto en el Cuadro de Honor y decimo en la General y con los Alpes por delante, terreno muy familiar para este arriero que es un verdadero orgullo de los Andes las posibilidades de joven para hacer algo grande se multiplican.

VUELTA A FRANCIA

Al termino de la decimaseptima etapa de la Vuelta a Francia, en el dia de la Independencia de su pais, el ciclista colombiano Rigoberto Uran sigue encabezando la tabla de posiciones en la categoria Juvenil, se ubica cuarto en el Cuadro de Honor y mantiene su decimo lugar en la Clasificacion General. En la decimaoctava etapa - de Pinerolo a Galibier Serre-Chevalier - la Vuelta regresa de Italia a Francia en un recorrido de 200 kms y se presenta, a la vez, como reto y promesa. El reto: Tres premios de montana de mas 2.000 mts de altura; terreno fertil para la esperada recuperacion del campeon del 2010, Alberto Contador quien desde hace dos etapas ha venido dando zarpasos muestra de una recuperacion total y quien ahora se encuentra en la sexta posicion a 3'15' del lider Thoma Voekler. Asimismo, su compatriota Samuel Sanchez, quinto en la general, ha dicho que a pesar de pertenecer a diferentes equipos, esta dispuesto a ayudar a su compatriota. La Promesa: Uran quien debe mantener su liderazgo en la Juvenil y escalar posiciones en la la General, al parecer sin contar con el apoyo de su equipo y dejar una huella positiva del futuro del ciclismo latinoamericano en general, colombiano en particular, en el que es considerado el maximo evento de este deporte.

¿Cómo estás mi adorada Colombia? Te han maltratado hasta el máximo, te han desangrando hasta la última gota y me preocupa pensar que empezarán a acabar con todo lo lindo y auténtico que te caracteriza. Espero que al bambuco, la cumbia y el ron, no me los toquen, que dejen seguir cocinado los sancochos, el ajiaco y el viudo de pescado a orillas del Magdalena. Que no sea un lujo poder subir a Monserrate a comer tamal con chocolate preparado en un caliente y primitivo fogón..
Te dejé muy joven, me involucré en una cultura nueva y diferente. He recorrido todo cuanto he podido de ésta mi patria adoptada. Si bien nací en ti, ésta en la que resido, ha crecido en mi... Y le soy amante fiel a las dos. Me he sometido a todos los cambios con una sonrisa y sin chistar palabra, estoica gracias al fervor que fluye por estas venas por las que corre la misma sangre de La Pola..
Hoy, diez lustro más tarde, estoy rodeada de una dulce soledad, recordando aquellos amores generosos pero entre un marco permanente de incertidumbre hacia los destinos de mi privilegiado pero azotado país.
Añoro mi terruño natal. A través de los ojos de la nostalgia lo veo a la vez tan extraño como familiar. Te deje moza y hoy estoy añeja. No sé si viviré de nuevo el aroma de tus amaneceres cafeteros, si tendré la dicha de respirar tu aires, deleitar mis ojos cansados en tus paisajes serenos, llorar mis penas adonde lo hiciera Guatavita derramando llanto convertido en esmeraldas y el mío en alivios ...mas lo que si sé con la certeza que acompaña los años, es que te pensaré con fuerza y le pediré a todos por el fin de los odiosos conflictos que nos separan. Por el fin de la avaricia y de los venenos que recorren los caminos y que despiadados dejan un mar de lágrimas a su paso. Pediré porque las llanuras, los campos, las montañas y mares que nos bañan, dejen de ser rutas de escape al mal destructivo y demandado por los poderosos.

Si supieras cuan maltratada me ha dejado mi viaje, tanto como a ti la intolerancia, la corrupción y la ambición material y ciega. El joven colombiano Rigoberto Uran viene cumpliendo como los grandes en el mayor evento del ciclismo mundial. Una vez finalizada la decimasexta etapa de la Vuelta a Francia, Uran se encuentra de primero en la categoria juvenil y decimo en la clasificacion general. A cinco etapas de la lllegada a los Campos Eliseos tras el paso por los Alpes, la ruta se presenta prometedora para este joven baluarte suramericano. Asimismo, en esta etapa el espanol Alberto Contador mostro su garra y ganas de comprobar por que fue el ganador del 2010 y que sigue siendo un contendor peligroso para llevarse la camiseta amarilla.

A Model to Follow
Let me begin by saying that I am an American born in Colombia - South America. I have lived in the United States for over 30 years now and have seen how the anti-immigrant sentiment has grown ever more hateful since the Reagan years. Having said this and being a resident of Miami, I have also seeing how the Cuban Adjustment Act has positively worked for and impacted our community, and how it has seamlessly allow us to absorb almost two million Cuban immigrants over more than four decades -- with the Mariel Boat Lift 125,000.00 at once, and help them adjust and thrive within our society.
I think our immigration issues are closely tied to our failed Foreign and unfair Commercial and Trading Policies. It seems to me that we have failed to explain this clearly to our fellow Americans. In the process we - the immigrants- have, as it usually happens, become the outlet for the frustrations brought about by our economic decline.
I think it would be of great help to educate our fellow citizens on the role that embassies and consulates play as well as the hurdles and high costs that a potential legal immigrant has to jump over and pay in order to get a visa. It would also be of tremendous help explaining the aftereffects that our free trade agreements have on local industries, agricultural and native communities in Latin America, and other countries, and how these agreements aim to benefit Multinational Corporations that do not have our best interests at heart.
It stands to reason that people in general do not emigrate, leave their native countries, for banal reasons. They do not risk their lives walking through deadly desserts, navigating over rough shark infested waters, pay thousands of dollars to coyotes and human cargo traffickers, for minor or banal reasons. They do not do it to make themselves vulnerable targets for discrimination and exploitation, no: they do it because staying may mean even greater risks and deem futures for their families. They do it to better themselves and dream of a brighter future denied to them in part by our own failed Foreign, Diplomatic and Trading policies.
The Cuban Adjustment Act model does exactly that; it helps families adjust to our communities and in turn makes them into productive legal members of our society.
There are no Illegal or Undocumented Immigrants, there is only Displaced Workers... Close to 12 Million of them.
Just wanted you to consider said Act as a model for a truly Comprehensive Immigration Reform .
